FAQ Your help center about FELIWAY products
Cats communicate through natural messages released in the air: “happy messages” (called feline facial pheromones).
When comfortable and happy, cats mark their territory as familiar by rubbing their face against corners, furniture, people, or other cats at home. By doing that, they release a message. When present in the environment, these “happy messages” provide calming and comfort to cats.
When modern life conflicts with their natural needs, cats can feel stressed and anxious. When stressed or anxious they do not mark their environment with these “happy messages” anymore and may pee outside the litter box, scratch or hide as a result.
FELIWAY CLASSIC provides “happy messages” to cats and makes them feel calm and comfortable at home. By mimicking the natural feline reassuring messages, FELIWAY helps cats happily adjust to pace of modern life, restores calm and may help decrease urine spraying, scratching and hiding.
A lot of cat owners start to see results within the first 7 days with their cat. However, every cat is unique. Depending on how long the signs have been present and how severe the signs may be, it may take longer to see effects.
We recommend using FELIWAY CLASSIC continuously for at least 1 month.
Most of the cats will benefit from continued use of FELIWAY Classic to create a happy environment in your home.
The minimum recommended duration is 1 month.
- To provide constant comfort to your cat at home
- If your cat is urine spraying or peeing outside the litter box
- If your cat shows signs of discomfort like hiding, reduced activity, reduced appetite, over-grooming
- If you anticipate changes in your home (moving, renovation, redecorating, arrival of a new pet, arrival of a new family member)
- In the room where the cat spends most of its time. Or where most of the urine spraying is occurring
- It is ideal to have multiple diffusers if multiple rooms are affected
- Hallways: Cats spend very little of their time in hallways, so the efficacy would be weaker (Except if the hallway is in the room where urine marking or scratching happens most often)
- Near litter box: Cats spend very little of their time near the litter box. FELIWAY is not a litter box attractant. (If the litter box is in the same room where your cat spends most of their time, it will not prevent your cat from using their litter box)
- If your cat is peeing, hiding or eating less for medical reasons, FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help. It is important to consult a veterinarian to rule out potential medical issues in your cat
- Please make sure your cat has an adequate number of litter boxes (one box per cat, plus one) and that they are cleaned daily. FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help decrease urine spraying if clean litter boxes are not available to the cat
- Scratching is a natural behavior of cats. Your cat should also have an easily accessible scratching post in the home. FELIWAY CLASSIC will not deter scratching if a scratching post is not provided. If your cat has conflict with another cat living in your home, we recommend using FELIWAY Friends instead
- FELIWAY will not help in aggression towards the owners. In such situations, we recommend consulting your veterinarian or a behaviourist
Mother cats communicate with her kittens through natural messages released into the air. These "harmony messages" are called cat appeasing pheromones. These "harmony messages" helps maintain social bonds between cats of all ages.
FELIWAY Friends sends “harmony messages” to cats and restores harmony between cats living together. By mimicking the natural feline appeasing messages, FELIWAY Friends helps your cats live in harmony and avoid tension, conflict and fighting.
Many cat owners start to see results within the first 7 days with their cats.
However, every cat is unique. Depending on how long the tension between cats has been present and how severe the conflict may be, it may take longer to see effects. We recommend using FELIWAY Friends continuously for at least 1 month.
Most of the cats living together will benefit from a continued use of FELIWAY Friends to ensure harmony in your home. The minimum recommended duration is 1 month.
- If your have 2 or more cats living together and if they shows signs of tension like chasing, blocking, staring
- If your cats living together are fighting, even if they have been fighting for a long time
Plug the diffuser into an electric socket and switch on continuously for one month in the room/s where cats spend most of their time resting and lounging.
Often cat owners will consider plugging the diffuser where cats fight or have conflicting encounters. This is actually not recommended as the cats may not get an adequate opportunity for exposure prior to an escalated state of arousal. In addition, such a location is not where cats spend most of their time: this would not allow them to benefit from the longest exposure to the comforting pheromone.
Optimal placement would allow the cats to be exposed in advance of conflict with sufficient opportunity to be influenced by the appeasing message.
- Hallways: Cats spend very little of their time in hallways
- If conflict between cats frequently occurs in a hallway, distribution of the cats’ resources should also be reconsidered within the home, to make sure each cat has an easy and free access to litter box, food and water bowl, resting area, without being potentially blocked by another cat
- If your cats do not have access to an individual food bowl and litter box, competition will not resolve and the tension between your cats might continue
- It will not help in case of tension or even aggression towards owners. In such situations, we recommend to consult your veterinarian or a behaviourist
- If the conflict between your cats is associated to urine spraying or scratching in the home, both FELIWAY Friends and FELIWAY CLASSIC are recommended. The two diffusers should be plugged where cats spend most of their time. They can be plugged in the same room.
- In an electric socket with a minimum clear distance above the diffuser of 1.5 m. (The oily vapor carrying the FELIWAY messages rises in a column of warm air above the diffuser)
- Each diffuser should be plugged into a separate outlet
- It would block the diffusion if the Diffuser in plugged:
- behind a door
- underneath furniture
- in any socket without 1,50 m clear above it
- near a heat return or open window
- In a multi-plug or multi-socket
- With an adaptor
- With an extension cord

- Use 1 diffuser for an area up to 65 sq. meters.
- You may need to use more than one diffuser for a large or multi-floor home
- 1 refill lasts up to 30 days
- It is recommended to replace the refill every 4 weeks. A small amount of liquid will remain in the vial (the vial will never be completely empty because the last few drops of liquid are not enough in contact with the wick to allow the diffusion process)
- 1 diffuser heating unit lasts up to 6 months. Replace the heating unit every 6 months to ensure optimum diffusion of the product
- It will take up to 24 hours for the room to become saturated with FELIWAY
- For situations that can be anticipated, it is advised that you plug in the diffuser 2-3 weeks in advance
- Don't unplug or switch off the diffuser at night. It takes approximately 24 hours for a room to become saturated with FELIWAY® CLASSIC or FELIWAY® Friends. If you unplug the diffuser you will never allow the pheromones to reach the amount needed in the environment to achieve clinical results.
- Leave the diffuser on 24 hours a day. The clinical trials were performed with continuous use of the diffuser (24 hours a day) allowing the cat to constantly perceive the reassuring messages
- FELIWAY refills should only be used with a Ceva diffuser
- FELIWAY Diffusers should never be used with a different companies refills
- FELIWAY CLASSIC and FELIWAY Friends refills and diffusers are interchangeable
- FELIWAY Diffusers come with a plug that fits with the local electric systems of the country they have been bought from. They cannot be used in a country with another voltage. They should never be used with an adapter or a voltage converter as it may lead to serious safety issues. Please check before use that your diffuser has the appropriate plug to be used in your country
- The refills are made of recyclable plastic material (PET). Please check with your local recycling facility to determine if you can recycle this product in your area
When plugged into an outlet, the diffuser will get warm, indicating it is working properly.
The diffuser contains a heating element that diffuses the product. It is designed to be warm to the touch.
The diffusion of the liquid from the Diffuser is a very slow process. In normal conditions of use, it is difficult to see any change in the vial over the first week of use. Slight variations will occur depending on air turnover. To make sure your diffuser is working properly, check that:
- the wick is not broken
- the device is turned on all the time (sometimes an electrical outlet is controlled by a wall switch)
- finally, try the device in a different electrical socket
The vapor (carrying FELIWAY “messages”) rises in a column of warm air above the diffuser. Sometimes the airflow in the room allows the vapor to re-condense and leave a visible mark. DON’T plug the diffuser under any furniture or object protruding from the wall. There should be at least 1,50 m. of space above the diffuser.
Be careful to plug the diffuser away from the air-conditioner, vents, cold air returns, or exhaust fan.
Usage with open windows and doors may result in the product not staying within your home. The product also may not last the full expected 30 days. In such a case, a different diffuser location should be considered within the house, targeting the area where the cat spends most of its time.

As a precaution, we recommend not using a diffuser in the same room as the aquarium. If the cat spends most of their time in the room with the aquarium, we recommend using an outlet as far from the aquarium as possible. We recommend using a cover over the aquarium. This is a precaution to avoid oily, diffused active ingredients settling on the surface of the water. The components themselves are not classified as toxic for the environment.
