DOES YOUR CAT OVER GROOM?
Bald patch on cat! Here is how to help
Why do cats over-groom?
Cats losing hair everywhere in the home, including on your clothes, is normal. Cats are natural self-groomers. In fact, they spend up to 25% of their lives grooming themselves.
Over-grooming is an issue when it causes hair loss or bald patch on your cat: you'll see a line or stripe down the back or on the foreleg of your cat with what looks like short, stubbly hair. Over-grooming not only makes your cat look less beautiful, it can also open the risk for skin infection.
Note that in some cases, you might not be able to see your cat licking, chewing or hair pulling. Most of them over-groom at night or when you're away!
Over-grooming can have either a medical or an emotional cause.
If your cat has skin issues, or if you recently changed your cat’s food, this excessive grooming may be an allergic reaction. Check with your vet for medical cause.
Bald patch on your cat or Over-grooming might also be caused by emotional discomfort. Many things can conflict your cat’s need of stability:
- Recent changes at home: moving home, adding new furniture, building work going on, new baby in the family...
- Another pet in the home or nearby: cats don’t like sharing resources like litter box, food bowls, etc… This may cause one cat to hide.
- Recent change in your routine: has your usual schedule changed leading you to be busier and less available?
